Just Salvos E-newsletter – October Edition

"The US is far too focused on expensive and failed military approaches in the drylands – whether in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, or Somalia – to pay heed to long-term economic development strategies aimed at addressing the root causes of these countries’ ongoing crises." Jeffrey Sachs

Welcome all to another newsletter. We are still waiting on the release of our sexualisation of children resource pack, but it will be available as soon as we have it! In the meantime, we want to draw your attention to our fourth and final resource pack that will be out in November (Ethical Consumption) as well as our Just Gifts Christmas Appeal project.

As many justice issues as we have here in our local communities, I can never escape the heavy burden of poverty, war and famine that rests on too many in the developing world. Millions are dying from preventable disease and malnourishment, and we must begin to re-examine our own priorities to ensure the lives of so many can be saved. Yes, it is about our own personal decisions about how and where we spend our money, but it is also the pressure we place on our political leaders to take the needs and interests of others into consideration alongside our own. We need individual and collective action to begin to close the ever widening gap between the rich and poor, and if the catalyst is not going to be the complete collapse of the world economy, it might just have to be the good will of both the individual, and of humankind.

I encourage you to check out the blog that includes the quote above (http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/sachs180/English) and let it stir you into action for those you may never meet, but who would really appreciate your attention none the less.

Till next time,

Captain Gen Peterson
Territorial Social Justice Director

Just Gifts Christmas Projects

Just Gifts has helped increase the health and wellbeing of thousands of families in some of the poorest communities in the world. Giving a gift from the Just Gifts catalogue this Christmas will not only reduce your shopping frustration, it will go a long way in changing the lives of others who so desperately need our help.

As well as purchasing from the catalogue, you can now team up in your church, workplace, family or friendship group and raise money for a specific community development project. With education as our focus, we have selected three Salvation Army projects and created a total target of $30000, and smaller targets within those projects for smaller fundraising teams.
